It takes hours for Vera to read through everything I shared with the Cryptozoian Council.

It’s near sunrise by the time she pushes away from the old computer. She arches her back before bending at the waist, letting her fingertips brush the floor. I try not to look at the curve of her lush ass. I fail. Vera’s hips flare out like a perfect hourglass that makes my mouth water. Here we are, in a tense and uncertain junction, and I’m ogling her.

You’re an ass, Jack.

“And? What’s the verdict, counselor?”

Vera continues to stretch, throwing an arm over her shoulder, arching into the movement as if she were presenting her breasts to me. The thin material of her shirt stretches over her chest while her crop top inches dangerously high, giving me a quick peek at her bra.

Trouser zucchinis are in season, apparently.

“Well, I honestly have to agree with Downer on this one. Lisbeth Bannon is listed as the CEO in absentia. She isn’t the one pulling strings. She’s a puppet. Probably a fancy puppet like a possessed ventriloquist doll, but there’s someone with their hand up her ass.” She cringes. “Sorry for the bad analogy. My brain is a little bit fried from all that reading. I haven’t read that much since law school.”

“It was quite the visual.” But what did that make me? I was the string puppet to a ventriloquist doll?

Double damn with a side of fuck.

“Unless we got access to all kinds of financial information, it would be impossible to figure out who Bannon is working for. Even at that, if she really is the mouthpiece for the rich and powerful, they’ll have all of that intel buried in offshore accounts and all kinds of shady shit.”

Wrecked like a carriage after midnight, I slouch down onto the wooden plant box. “What does this mean? What do we do?”

Vera slides down beside me. “Honestly? I’ve got no idea. Full disclosure? I’m not a full agent yet.”

It’s my turn to jump to my feet.

“Director Cooper is keeping my badge until I can ingest blood like a normal vampire bat. I’m not as connected as a real agent would be. I don’t think Alyce expected this to be so complicated. On the surface, this really was just some glorified babysitting job.”

“Sorry.”

“Don’t be. You were played, and then you tried to make it right. Now we need to evaluate our next course of action. We also need to figure out why Director Cooper didn’t have all of this information from Downer. I know she and Erhart Know, the rep for the Cryptozoian Council don’t exactly get along, but this is weird. What’s Downer’s plan for us?”

“Downer wants us to stay here for weeks. Months maybe, while they figure their shit out.”

“Right. Maybe we can help them along with that. Can you do more digging from here?”

“Not really,” I answer. Her shoulders deflate slightly. “I only have internet for a few hours every night, and it’s not super reliable.”

“Damn. If we could do more digging here, at least we could have hope of finding something.
